Replacing a MacBook Pro Battery Cells

Battery Replacement

When your portable Mac’s battery needs to be replaced, let me handle it!  A typical lifespan for a MacBook battery is about 1,000 cycles, or how many times it has been fully charged and discharged in total.  The Mac Guy uses only the highest quality battery packs, because inferior packs can damage your computer or in the worst case scenario, start a fire!

How do you know if your battery needs to be replaced?  In some cases, your Mac will tell you the battery needs to be serviced when you check it’s charge level on the top menu bar.  This is the ideal scenario because you can plan for replacement at a time that works for you.

If you notice a bulge in your MacBook Pro’s bottom case, or the trackpad acts strangely – you might have a swollen battery.  Normally, a battery is charged and discharged to specific voltage limits, which is controlled by an electronic management system in the battery pack but if there’s a failure, the voltage can vary and then the battery can over-discharge and over-charge, producing gas.

If there’s enough gas, the pressure can make the plastic pouch where the battery is stored deform outward. This swollen pack can press against the trackpad, making it difficult to control and sometimes click.  If left unchecked, the entire case can become deformed and cause permanent damage.  If the cell ruptures, it can in rare cases cause a lithium fire!

Get your battery life back (or better!) and be safe by getting your battery replaced.

In later models, Apple began gluing individual cells into 2mm-deep wells sculpted directly into the aluminum unibody – this makes removal and replacement more time consuming, requiring special solvent and precautions to be taken.
